Case Study Empowering Diaspora Elders

Project: Anti-Racism Workshop #1

Workshop Date: 23 October 2025 | Case Study Published: 5 December 2025

The Challenge

Many elders within the diaspora community have significant lived experiences with systemic racism. However, they often lack a safe, structured environment to process these experiences or understand the contemporary Australian legal frameworks available for their protection.

The Intervention

Tawasul Foundation, in collaboration with the Beth Nahrin Assyria Association and Bloom Community Care, hosted a community-led workshop titled "Driving Change."

Led by Tawasul Foundation leadership team, the session brought together over 75 elders for an open dialogue. The focus was on identifying practical ways to tackle racism through integration, resilience, and positive inclusion.

"For the first time, I feel I have the words to explain my experience to my grandchildren." — Workshop Participant

Key Outcomes

Lived Experience as Expertise: The workshop moved away from "top-down" lecturing. Instead, it centered on the elders' own stories, transforming the session into a peer-led empowerment program.

Building Integration Resilience: Participants identified that open and engaging conversations are the most effective way to foster community resilience and bridge cultural gaps.

The Power of Collaboration: By collaborating with local partners (Beth Nahrin & Bloom), the project successfully engaged a demographic that is often isolated or difficult to reach through traditional anti-racism campaigns.
